Ichiro's Malt Chichibu 2024 The US Edition Single Malt Japanese
The U.S. Edition 2024 from Chichibu Distillery is a standout Japanese single malt—bright, nuanced and deeply crafted despite its youthful age profile. Though no official age statement, it delivers compelling whisky character: crisp fruit, fine grain texture and polished oak influence make it a sophisticated pour for serious enthusiasts. With only a small number of barrels and limited bottling for the U.S. market, it offers both collectability and drinkability.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Distilled in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, by the Chichibu Distillery (founded by whisky-maker Ichiro Akuto), this U.S. Edition 2024 is crafted exclusively for the American market. The liquid is a vatted single malt drawn from just sixteen barrels—of which two were floor-malted at Chichibu, a labor-intensive process rarely used in large scale whisky production. The barrels range in age from 4 to 10 years and consist of 15 ex-bourbon barrels and 1 ex-sherry hogshead. The whisky is un-peated, non-chill-filtered and naturally coloured, and is bottled at 52.5% ABV.
The label stands out too—it playfully features a nod to Western pop-culture, symbolizing the cross-Pacific vision of the release.
Tasting Profile
Nose: Fine and inviting—ripe green pear, lemon-zest and white peach meld with light biscuit-crumb and a whisper of marzipan. The ex-bourbon barrels lend soft vanilla and honeyed grain, while the sherry component introduces dark cherry and subtle dried fruit.
Palate: Medium-bodied, smooth, with elegance. The fruit character continues: orchard fruit, gentle tart red-berry, and a clean grain-core expression. Mid-palate introduces warm acacia honey, soft cinnamon spice and oak tannin that frames rather than overpowers.
Finish: Clean, poised and lingering. Almond skin or gentle walnut bitterness rounds out the sweetness, a chalky mineral thread emerges, and the oak tannins remain refined. The high ABV gives presence but the texture is polished rather than aggressive.
