Domaines Leflaive 2020 Pouilly-Fuisse Esprit

Domaines Leflaive 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé “Esprit” is a poised, quietly luxurious white Burgundy that blends Mâconnais ripeness with Leflaive’s signature precision—stone-fruit generosity, a cool mineral spine, and a refined, gently toasty finish. It’s a premium Pouilly-Fuissé that drinks beautifully now with food, yet has the composure to gain nuance over several years in cellar.

Origins & Craftsmanship
“Esprit Leflaive” is Domaine Leflaive’s Burgundy sourcing project, vinified with the same exacting standards that made Leflaive a benchmark in Puligny-Montrachet—emphasizing purity of fruit, texture, and site expression. This 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé is 100% Chardonnay, assembled from two plots in the commune of Chaintré (vines planted in 1951) on clay-limestone soils—a classic foundation for both mineral detail and mouth-coating depth.

The fruit is hand-harvested, then raised with a measured, classic Burgundian élevage: one year in oak barrels (15% new) followed by six months in stainless steel vats. The result is a style that reads polished and complete—oak as structure and seasoning, not a dominant flavor—supporting the wine’s orchard-fruit core and saline-mineral tension.

Critics Reviews
Wine Spectator scores the 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé “Esprit” 92 points. Bruce Sanderson highlights ripe apricot, peach, and grapefruit flavors accented by toasty oak and baking spice, carried by lively acidity and a long, citrus-and-spice finish.

Tasting Profile
Nose: Ripe peach and apricot lead, followed by lemon curd, white flowers, and a subtle suggestion of toasted hazelnut and warm baking spice. A faint saline/mineral note keeps the aromatics crisp and lifted.

Palate: Medium-full and finely textured—stone fruit and citrus at the core, with a gentle, creamy oak roundness that never overwhelms. Bright acidity tightens the mid-palate, giving the wine energy and a clean, gastronomic line.

Finish: Persistent and mineral-tinged, trailing citrus zest, peach skin, and a soft echo of toast and spice that reads elegant rather than rich.
